How to change settings from 480i to 720p then to 1080i

I just go a toshiba 37 LCD HD wide screen tv. And when i click to watch t.v. it says 480i 4:3. Now I payed for 1080i , and i've gon through all the manuels and tried fooling around, no dvd player is connect .How to change settings from 480i to 720p then to 1080i
HD tvs will only show what signal they get. If they get a signal with 480i then they'll show 480i. If they get a signal with 1080i, they'll show 1080i. If you want HD, get HD satellite, or HD cable, or antenna. or HD upconversion. How to change settings from 480i to 720p then to 1080i
First of all, you need component (3 wires, red, blue, and green) or an HDMI connection to input high def signals. A single wire composite cable isn't going to work. Do you have a high definition cable or satellite box? You'll need that too. With my Panasonic, the TV defaults to 1080i IF the satellite box is set to that resolution. If you don't have a high definition box, the only high definition signals you can get would be with an antenna. (I am assuming your TV has a built in hi def tuner.) And of course, you have to have stations broadcasting in hi def near enough so your antenna can receive them. As for your DVD player, if it's progressive scan you can get 480p resolution, unless it's capable of ';upconverting'; to 720p or 1080i. Otherwise you'll only get 480i from that too. The DVD would also need to be connected via component or HDMI cables. Finally, with a 37'; set, 720p is all you really need. It will give you a better picture than 1080i.
If you have it connected from your cable box, did you connect it with an hdmi cable? If not, that could be your issue. Also, don't forget that some channels are not yet broadcasting in digital so they won't look as clear. It's all based on what comes into your box from your cable company.

The signals will be going to digital in the near future so that would resolve itself. Still, you need the HDMI connection for your cable box and tv.

You have no control over the 1080 signal - it's your cable company.
If it is hooked up to a hd cable box then you need to set the box up.

To do this turn off the cable box %26amp; leave the tv on and go to the converter box and hold down 3 keys at the same time. List, INFO,%26amp; Guide, then just follow the directions. Email me lz@cabledoctors.com if this does not solve it.
some channels are not H.D on television even if you payed for them only some channels broadcast in hd if you pay for it ask your cable provider what channels you receive in H.D
